Creating Customise Work Items Hierarchy

Report X extends your project management capabilities in Jira by allowing you to create flexible, customized hierarchies for your work items—going beyond Jira’s traditional three-level structure (Epic → Story → Sub-task). This enhanced hierarchy provides greater clarity and visibility into how your work items relate, nest, and organize, empowering you to tailor workflows and processes to your team’s unique needs.

How Report X Constructs Hierarchies

Report X intelligently combines two key relationship types:

  1. Work Item Linking – leveraging Jira’s built-in issue link types such as blocks, relates to, depends on, etc.

  2. Parent-Child Relationships – using Jira’s standard hierarchy of Epic → Story → Sub-task.

By integrating these, Report X creates a comprehensive, meaningful hierarchy that accurately reflects your project's structure.

Visualizing Customise Hierarchies

Report X supports defining hierarchies with up to five levels, where each level can represent different work item types such as Epic, Story, Task, etc.

Building the Hierarchy

  • Each hierarchy level corresponds to a configurable work item type.

  • For example, if you want the top levels of your hierarchy to show Epic and Story, select these work types for those levels.

  • The selected work types appear as labels in dropdown menus for each level.

  • Work items of the chosen types display in the hierarchy tree, available in both Table and Card views. (learn more)

Selecting Work Types

  • The dropdown for each level includes:

    • A search box to find specific work types quickly.

    • A list of all available work types.

    • Buttons to Select All or Clear All work types for that level.

Viewing Your Hierarchy

Once configured, your custom hierarchy will be displayed in the main panel. You can switch between Table View and Card View using the top navigation bar.

Creating custom work items linking

To build custom hierarchies using parent-child relationships and work item linking, follow these steps:

  1. Navigate to Settings and select Work items.

  1. In the left menu, click on Work item linking.

  1. Scroll down to Add New Link Type.
    a. Name: Provide a descriptive name for your new link type.
    b. Outward Description: Define the meaning of the link from the source issue’s perspective.
(Example: "blocks" – meaning "This issue blocks another issue.")
    c. Inward Description: Define the meaning from the target issue’s perspective.
(Example: "is blocked by" – meaning "This issue is blocked by another issue.")

These descriptions will help users understand the relationship direction clearly.
